Gary Stewart is a local artisan who taught woodworking at a local high school for 31 years. Gary says teaching high school kept him constantly learning new things and this helped to keep his work fresh. Gary uses different types of wood for each of his pieces, he uses mahogany, yellow cedar, black walnut, maple and teak among others. He uses local wood as much as possible and the deer hides that he uses on his drums are also local to Campbell River. Gary’s wood designs can sometimes change shape due to the moisture in the air here on the west coast.
